Welcome BackAnother new year has ticked over and The Vandal ventures into a fourth year of blogging.  So here we go again with a little humour, a touch of satire, a hint of contradiction, a morsel of madness, the odd recipe and of course, maybe even a grammar tip or two. Possibly a few writing tips and publishing ideas along with the customary rants and raves and very silly ideas.

And, no I haven’t forgotten the freebie. Read on.

However, it wouldn’t be right to start a new year without at least one or two new improvements. Firstly, you’ll notice that The Vandal’s website has a new cleaner brighter look, so I haven’t been eating, drinking and sleeping during all of my vacation. There’s a new menu system as well, so finding your way around The Vandal’s ever increasing resources will be much easier.

Secondly, there is a new section on the Vandal’s menu. Short Stories. So, why?

Over the holidays I was reading about book promotion, and especially about free ebook giveaways. As a means of introducing new  readers to a writer it’s not a bad move, and one that has become rather standard now. But it does necessitate a reader going to the trouble of downloading a book, loading it onto a reading device, and then perhaps get around to reading all of it or some of it – one day. My experience has been that it is only a very small percentage of sales that are derived from this giveaway means of promotion.

With a short story published on a high traffic site and indexed on search engines, I think a more positive and longer term marketing effect can be achieved. So stay tuned, as this will be open to all writers to post their short stories on The Vandal.

The third new improvement is an updated edition of The Vandal’s book. The new edition is cleverly titled The Vandal and replaces the now three year old Vandalism of Words.

So welcome back to The Vandal for his fourth year. Sit back, relax and enjoy, and don’t forget to tell all your friends to drop by for a read. Now all I have to do is get moving and start writing a year’s worth of daily blog posts. Plus one extra of course because it is a leap year!

Oh yes. The freebie! Just to say thank you for reading The Vandal’s first blog post for 2012, go help yourself to a free copy of February The Fifth from Smashwords for your Kindle, Kindle app, Nook, Sony Reader, iPad or whatever. But be quick, it’s only free for one day and a bit! And if you enjoy the book, well, wouldn’t I love to read your review too!

Welcome back, Derek. I like the new look of your website, and I’m very keen about your short story plans. Of course, I would have to write one first. LOL. And yes, I’m one of the lucky ones who grabbed your freebie. Thanks for that, and looking forward to 2012 with The Vandal.

I have just come across your site, I spend new years redoing my site menus too, at least I have something productive to show for my time off rather than just another new years on the drink (but I did that too!)!

I’m looking forward to the year’s posts, Derek! I just put your freebie, “February the Fifth,” on my Kindle. Of course, I have four other books ahead of that to read … I also checked out your short story section and thought perhaps I had something that I could adapt, but unfortunately it’s almost 5,000 words and needs every one of them. That’s about the shortest thing I could ever write! Oh, well …

Great Lorinda! I hope you enjoy Feb5 when you get to it on your reading list. But a real pity about your long short story! lol
