My name is Debbi Mack, and I’m the author of the Sam McRae mystery series. I’m a “recovering attorney” who practiced law for nine years before deciding to call it quits and become a freelance writer instead.
It was during this time that I began writing fiction. The research I did as a freelancer piqued my interest in becoming an information specialist, so I decided to return to school and earn a Masters in Library Science. At this point, I added research to my list of services, although writing continued to be the mainstay of my business. Further, I continued to work on my fiction.
By 2004, I finished writing two novels. In 2005, the second one, IDENTITY CRISIS, was published by a small press as the first book in the Sam McRae mystery series. In November 2004, I suffered a stroke from which I seemed to completely recover, until about five or six months later, when my left hand and foot began clenching non-stop. I was diagnosed with post-stroke dystonia, a rare movement disorder that has no cure. However, despite the difficulties this created, I refused to quit writing and marketing my work.
Nine months after IDENTITY CRISIS was first published, it went out of print when the small press went under. In 2009, I decided to self-publish the book, in print and ebook formats. At the end of 2009, I decided to self-publish all my books and devote myself to writing and marketing my fiction full-time, in the same manner that I did my freelance writing. In March 2011, IDENTITY CRISIS hit the New York Times ebook bestseller list.
That book and the sequel LEAST WANTED have been Kindle Top 100 bestsellers on Amazon.com and Amazon UK. I’ve published several short stories, one of which was nominated for a Derringer Award in 2010. My short stories have been published in various anthologies, including SHAKEN: STORIES FOR JAPAN and a short collection of my own work titled FIVE UNEASY PIECES.
The third Sam McRae mystery, ALIEN SHORES, will be released in early 2012. I’m working on a young adult novel about a 13-year-old girl with some unusual issues. I have plenty of ideas for more Sam McRae novels, as well as two stand alone novels that I could revise and publish.
Among my many interests, I enjoy baseball, travel, taking walks, reading, movies, cats and chocolate (not necessarily in that order). I’m planning to sell my ebooks directly to readers from my Web site and will announce when that service becomes available. Feel free to check it out on my site, as well as to read my blog My Life on the Mid-List for the latest information about my books, events, news and various things on my mind. I also have four other blogs, which you can access from the sidebar of my Web site. I live in Maryland with my husband and a bunch of cats.
