10 tips and tricksHave you noticed that ‘10 Tips and Tricks’ has become one of the most searched for phrases on the Internet? From Apple to Zombies, there are tips and tricks for all manner of topics and interests. Well, in keeping with my tradition of avoiding anything remotely ‘current’ I must remind you firstly that I never follow trends and secondly that I only ever go as far as 5 with anything anyway. February 5 taught me that. The reason is very simple. 10 takes a lot more thinking, research and writing than 5. Duh! Even with tips and tricks, which I admit are not my fortè at all.

Now, restricting myself to 5 tips or tricks to offer anyone in any form is a challenge. What could I offer?

Maybe 5 creative applications of the Present Perfect, but who the hell is interested in that? Possibly 5 uses of the Past Perfect when the Past Simple would have sufficed for many? How about the correct use of the humble comma in 5 easy lessons? The surprisingly frequent use of the schwa in every 5th word in the English language? I think not. The seven forms of phrasal verbs? Oops. That’s more than 5, so ignore. 5 ways to use an em dash when you thought a semi colon would do? A list of 5 currently fashionable discourse markers and how to abuse them? 5 reasons to use single quotation marks instead of the traditional 66-99 style?

Anyway, my point got lost in my wandering, which I’m sure you’re all used to by now. I hereby intend to re-format internet search and forge ahead in making ‘5 Tips and Tricks’ a top ten search phrase. I want quality, not quantity.

Boy, the red wine is good this evening.

I just posted a blog about my "Top IPhone Apps for Writers"….and it only included 7 apps! Maybe I should have said, "Top 7 IPhone Apps…" I probably would have been at the top of my search on Google!
